Magha Puja Day In Thailand

Magha Puja Day is celebrated on a full moon day of the third lunar month which invariably falls in the last week of February or beginning of March. In general, most Buddhists are not aware of the significance of Magha Puja Day. As a result, the number of people in the ceremony may be less than those at Visakha Puja or Asanha Puja Days. However, Magha Puja Day carries an equal meaning and importance to all Buddhists.

Magha Puja Day marks four events that took place during the lifetime of Lord Buddha. These events are:

1.1250 Buddhist monks from different places came to pay homage to Lord Buddha at Valuwan Vihara in Rajgaha, the capital of Magaha State. Each monk came on his own initiative without prior notification.

2.All monks were enlightened monks

3.All 1250 monks had been individually ordained by Lord Buddha

4.They assembled on the full moon day of the third lunar month

In the evening of that day, Lord Buddha gave the assembled monks a discourse, laying down the principles of his teachings and summarized into three acts to do good, to abstain from bad action and to purify the mind.

There is no indication as to when the Magha Puja ceremony actually took place. However, King Rama IV ordered the royal Magha Puja ceremony to be performed in the Emerald Buddha Temple in 1851. Later the ceremony gained popularity and was performed through out the kingdom. In Thailand, the day is public holiday so that people from all walks of life can participate in the religious activities.

In the Emerald Buddha Temple, the king of Thailand presides over the religious ceremony and leads a candle lit procession within the temples compound. This procession take place at 8:00 p.m. in Bangkok and is led by Buddhist monks.

A Beginner's Guide to Flipping Houses

If you're dreaming of making money in real estate, it's time to stop dreaming and get to work, because making money in real estate isn't just a vague pipedream. It can be done, even by a young and inexperienced person, when you learn how to "flip" houses.

A friend of mine, we'll call her Tai, made a fortune in real estate, beginning at the age of twenty, with no help from anyone else. Here's how she did it:

Tai began by buying a HUD repo, which allowed her to get into the house for no money down. Then she fixed it up and sold it herself. At closing, she had made enough profit to by a second fixer-upper, but this time, she paid all cash. Tai went right to work fixing her second house, and when she sold that one, she collected profit of $44,000, which allowed her to pay cash for her third house!

By now, Tai was comfortable with her formula, and within a short time, she had flipped her third house, realizing enough profit to pay cash for yet another house, as well as being able to buy the custom pickup of her dreams. And all of this had happened in the span of just nine months!

Tai's formula was simple. She located houses that needed only cosmetic work, avoiding those that required structural repairs. She did all the painting herself, inside and out, and updated the home's lighting, plumbing fixtures, and carpeting. Once renovations had been completed, all three houses sold quickly, and at a significant profit.

Flipping houses is the most tried-and-true way to make a fortune in real estate, so don't listen to anyone who tries to tell you that it can't be done or that you need to have a great deal of start-up money. That's not true. You can buy houses with no money down through various loan programs, and sellers will often help you with the closing costs.

I know what I'm talking about. My husband and I bought our 27th house earlier this year, for no money down, and we expect to make a profit of at least $100,000 for just one month of hard work!

But we take the process a step further, making our houses outshine the competition by also using Design Psychology, although our buyers never know that. All they know is that they feel good when they're in our homes, which makes them want to buy them, even if they're more expensive than the house next door.

There's no other business that can make you as much money, with as little start-up cost, in as short a time, as investing in real estate. In fact, more millionaires made their fortunes in real estate than in any other business. And you can do it, too. You just have to stop dreaming and get started.

Understanding Mexican Culture - Part 4

Regionalism

In chapter 25, I asked the question: Why would someone from Chihuahua City speak so disdainfully about the people of Guanajuato? Actually, from our trip through Mexico in the Spring of 2007, I could be asking that question of several of the cities and states we visited and of the people we talked to in those places. I recall one conversation with a cab driver in San Luis Potosi who called Guanajuato, and this is hard to say, the dirtiest place his family had ever visited. Amazingly, in this man's first visit to Guanajuato with his extended family, they were so offended that they haven't been back to Guanajuato since.

The sad truth is that though other cities in Mexico can present a pristine picture of clean streets, Guanajuato, the city, is not one of them. There is a town in the State of Guanajuato that is wonderfully clean called Dolores Hidaglo. It is much smaller and yet people manage to put their trash in trash bins, unlike the people of the city of Guanajuato.

Though how the city of Guanajuato thinks what constitutes a clean street is not the issue of this chapter, what is the point is that Mexicans from different regions in Mexico have very distinct opinions about other cities and states within the Republic. Mexicans feel so strongly about the different regions of their own country that they have a word in their uniquely Mexican Spanish vocabulary for this phenomenon: Forajeros. Whereas we gringos are called Extranjeros, which means people from without or strangers, the word Forajeros means foreigners. I find this astounding!

The concept of Regionalism is so strong in Mexico that within this word, Forajeros, there are all the nuances of exclusiveness. What I mean is that the aversion, suspicion, and the we-wish-you-weren't-in-our-region-so-get-out normally reserved for the Extranjeros (we Gringos), is bound up in this cultural meaning of this word. This bears repeating: I find this astounding!

Because of the masks Mexicans wear that require the skillful Gringo expat's careful and methodical investigation to find out what's really underneath it all, the general run-of-the-mill monolingual Gringo is not going to know of this regionalism concept that exists in each and every state in the Republic of Mexico. Unless you have the linguistic skill to ask, you will never know of the regionalism that causes your pal from Chihuahua City to talk despairingly about the citizens of Guanajuato and call them cold and clannish.

I was talking a couple of weeks ago with a Mexican friend over breakfast. He wanted to know about our trip and where we went exactly. When I got to the part in our itinerary when we visited Reynosa and Ciudad Victoria (cities in La Frontera or Border Towns), I could see his face doing a Mexican hat dance. When I asked him what he was thinking, one word came out of his mouth: Pachucos.

Here was the Regionalism Dynamic that Mexicans hide behind masks coming into play.

The Pachucos were a minority group in La Frontera or the Border Towns. They were Hispanic youths who migrated from West Texas to Southern California and who culturally were neither Mexican nor Texan. They were something in between culturally and they knew this. So, they set about creating a subculture of their own, complete with their own language. Their dress, customs, and language became distinct from traditional rootswhatever those were. Their arrogance, their propensity towards violence, and their bizarre dress earned them the reputation of being gang members in the 1940's American Press.

Though you will find Mexicans in the Heartland who speak irreverently of La Frontera, or Border Towns, and refer to the people as Los Pachucos, some will mention instead the Pochas of the border cities.

The original meaning of Pochas was "the discolored ones" and referred to the youth of the border towns as neither Mexican nor American culturally. This reminds me of the Pachucos because the Pochas have even invented a bastardized version of Spanish that is often called, Pochismos. Mexicans often will point to the existence of the Pochas or Pochos being the direct result of the negative influence of the American culture. Though Mexicans want American or modern technology, they don't want to become Americans in the process. However, the youth of the border towns seem to have this cultural identity crisis in which Pochismos has risen. They try acting like both cultures.

I did not know for the longest time why those in Guanajuato with whom I would speak about the border towns spoke of them with such disdain. It was almost like they didn't even acknowledge the border towns as part of Mexico. Really, if you have sufficient fluency in Spanish to talk to those in Mexico's Heartland about La Frontera, you will see exactly what I mean. If you can get them to talk, and many will change the subject while acting really uncomfortable talking about the border, they will have nothing good to say about the cities in La Frontera.

Without fear of contradiction, not one Guanajuatense with whom I've spoken about the border towns has ever said anything good about them. Not one. This is indeed an excellent example of Regionalism at its best (worst?).

Another idea or Regionalistic Concept that those in the Heartland will tell you about the Border Towns is that of the Veteranos.

These young men are essentially murderous cutthroat, robbing gangsters that would shoot you just to watch you fall. It is probably these unsavory types that most unenlightened Americans think represent all the people in Mexico. I know Americans who I cannot dissuade of the stereotype that if they take one step into Mexico, no matter where, that they will be killed. Some of my relatives think I have to dodge bullets each time I step out the front door.

These Veteranos are members of the murderous gangs of the border towns about which you hear constantly in the Americans press. For some reason, the American press never makes the distinction between the border towns and the rest of Mexico. If the Mexicans I know will not acknowledge Las Ciudades de la Frontera as their own, why should the American Press force them to? I mean, really!

Some of the shopkeepers in the border towns are indeed rip-off artists. They've earned this reputation through their dubious and dishonest wheeling and dealing, so they have nothing to cry foul about. They are devils and will seek out your weakness and exploit it. They regard Americans as suckers and take advantage of the uninformed visitor from America.

Once my friend, Mark, and I were walking through the streets of Ciudad Jurez at about noon on a Saturday. This enormously fat Mexican was standing on the corner, in broad daylight, hawking the most foul and immoral services. A policeman wasn't standing more than three feet away from him. This guy waddled over to us and offered us not only a host of illegal drugs, a list he recited in a booming voice loud enough to be heard over the roar of the traffic, but in addition, offered us women or men or both for our sexual pleasure.

If Americans end up maintaining their stereotypical image of the evil and duplicitous Mexico, it will be because of cities like Jurez that will keep the fire fueled. If Mexico wants to put an end to the world regarding them as lawless, corrupt, and immoral, then they need, as a group-oriented nation, to put a stop to what exists in the border towns.

Something that I find so fascinating is that in Guanajuato, there are three barrios, Puquero, Cerro de los Leones, and Cerro del Cuarto that the Guanajuatenses in the rest of the barrios speak of as they would speak of the youth of La Frontera--Regionalistically. One of my wife's ESL students had a sociology project to do in which she had to do a door-to-door survey in one of these barrios. She and her team hired a city police officer, during his off time, to Hot Escort Girls them safely through this barrio.

In the Puquero barrio, in which my wife and I used to live when we first moved to Guanajuato, the youth were also a bit like the Pachucos, Pochos, and maybe even a little like the Veteranos. They even had a dialect that to this day I cannot comprehend. The house in which we were living was previously occupied by a Canadian lady who got firebombed for not playing along with some extortion racket the youth had going.

Sounds like La Frontera youth, if you ask me!

This Regionalism is most certainly an interesting concept to keep exploring. Though I've had conversations with connected people in Guanajuato, like our friend, Doa Carmen, I can't quite (yet) get out of them why they think Mexicans are kinder or sweeter the further north you go in this contradictory but wonderfully interesting country.

Why Men Are Afraid To Commit

How many times have you heard a relative, friend or colleague say Right now our relationship is great, we have a wonderful time and great Adult Sex Site, if we get married well end up just like all the other married couples?"

Well, I have heard that hundreds of times. Joe, not his real name, is a really charming character, looks and personality. He and Terry had been dating for four years. He came to see me because they were growing apart and he wanted me to help him figure out if he should go ahead and get married even when his intuition" was telling him it would be a big mistake.

Usually when I work with people struggling with commitment phobia, I tell them a little bit of doubt is normal when taking a major life transition like committing to another person. But for Joe it was more than a little doubt. And if I had not met and seen him and Terry together, Id probably have thought, well, his hesitation is a warning that things will not work out. But even to a stranger, it was obvious that these two were made for each other. So what was the problem?

Joes problem was not that he did not want to get married. His problem was that that he was afraid that he and Terry would end up just like his parents. Joe like many of us had witnessed an unhealthy and unhappy relationship between his parents when growing up. It was not surprising that his childhood experiences (consciously or unconsciously) coloured the way he felt about commitment and marriage. He had as a child been a victim of his parents dysfunctional relationship and his subconscious was telling him that if it happened once before, it could happen again. May be even, guilt (mostly assumed by children in a dysfunctional union) played apart. And with one out every two marriages ending up in divorce, it was only natural that he felt fearful and uncertain about the future.

Joe like many of us had allowed his parents definition of marriage to control his own life. Many people, especially men often associate commitment" or marriage with loss of freedom, routine and limitation. The word settling down" sounds like bringing down the relationship from where it is at emotionally and Adult Sex Siteually. And for those whove been married and divorced, the fear of going through it all over again can be paralyzing.

What Joe needed to understand was that he had the choice to redefine his own meaning of marriage and commitment. Commitment is no guarantee that the other person will always love, respect and protect us and yet without the security a commitment sometimes provides most relationships become superficial and directionless. Many people emotionally and Adult Sex Siteually involved over a prolonged period of time without some sort of commitment (even if it is a commitment not to get committed or a commitment to talk about it at a later date) suffer from a constant state of unconscious anxiety.

Through coaching Joe was able to feel confident enough to redefine what commitment meant to him, personally. Once he felt the power and freedom to create his own experiences and give his own meaning to commitment the relationship between him and Terry improved drastically. Within a year they were married.

Sometimes just discussing what two people want a commitment to mean and how they want their relationship to look like removes all the concerns about making a long-term commitment. What was fear becomes excitement that comes from co-creating experiences that are unique to two individuals. But quite often, it is hard for a couple to sit down and discuss commitment because one says one thing and the other hears something completely different. When I spoke to Terry months after their wedding she told me that when Joe said he was afraid theyd end up like his or her parents, what she heard was all women want is commitment and a wedding". And sometimes shed hear you are just like my mother, desperate, dependant and defenseless. The Terry, I know is nothing like desperate, dependant and defenseless. She didnt even want to get married right away all she wanted was reassurance that the relationship had a future. In the end, Joe was the one who really wanted to commit and get married.

That said, given a choice most men do what they want and what they believe is in their best interest. If you have to coerce a man to commit to you, you are definitely with the wrong man. A man would not commit to a relationship unless he is convinced that he will get what he wants now, and with reasonable expectations will continue to do so in the future. Fortunately for women what men want includes a love interest, trust, emotional support and commitment, some of the same things women want but its the way he perceives you that gives him that little psychological push he may need to help him to make up his mind. Knowing what a man wants and being aware of his apprehensions about commitment is the first step toward understanding what it takes to give a man what he wants from a relationship with you.

Remember, a pre-mature commitment, one that takes place before you spend time deepening your knowledge of one another can be powerful enough to sabotage and otherwise well matched partnership.

Rustic Country Decor - How to Decorate Cottage Style Homes

Rustic country decor and how to decorate cottage style homes are extensions of American country style decorating. In addition, traditions are borrowed from French, English and some Swedish country looks. Rustic country decor can be defined as coarse, charmingly simple, unfussy, unfinished and yet with endearing qualities. Rustic country decorating includes the use of natural woods, aged surfaces, rough finishes and simple lines. Cottage style homes are comfortable, modest, quaint homes that can be made of thick stone or log wood.

Floors in rustic country decor and cottage style homes are made with stone or wood materials. Wooden floors were traditionally constructed with boards that were Kara Bare and simply waxed and hand-polished (high-gloss varnishes did not exist). Sometimes the boards were painted with light colors. If you like floor coverings, use oriental rugs and throws for visual warmth and color. Rustic country decor is about handcrafted objects, simplicity, furnishings that you enjoy and connecting back to nature.

Rustic cottage furniture is commonly made with pine and perhaps painted with hand-painted designs such as flowers, birds, animals, country scenery or leaves. Use ladderback chairs, rocking chairs, benches, wicker furniture and Windsor chairs. A large rectangular table made of pine is a good option for your kitchen or dining room table. To give your furniture a rustic look, brush a coat of paint on the furniture piece, then rub most of the paint off. After it dries, apply wood stain unevenly for an older weathered appearance. It will be perfect and rustic looking!

Baskets can be used to store wood, pine cones, flowers, plants and needlework. Brass candle holders, oil or kerosene lamps, sconces, hurricane lamps, tin lanterns, recessed ceiling fixtures or a vintage wrought-iron or metal chandelier provide successful lighting for rustic country decor and cottage style homes. Colors used in rustic country decor or cottage style homes are neutral tones ranging from white to bone, earth tones, red barn, blues and greens.

For rustic country decor in the kitchen, use open shelves, hutches, buffets, plate racks and cupboards for storage. Often, country kitchen storage is crammed with stoneware pots, plain glazed earthenware and glass jars. Kitchen pots should be made of copper, steel or cast iron -- cookware tends to be large and plain. Use open shelving in the rustic country kitchen to display plates, dishes and dinnerware collections. Natural woods, light colors and bright fabrics work great for window treatments. Adding a rustic butcher block island creates a wonderful visual effect as well as provides useful functionality.

A rustic country decor bathroom has neutral tones or soft colored walls, antique-looking lighting, and wooden antiques or antique reproduction cabinets and vanity. Knowing how to decorate cottage style homes and bathrooms can result in creating a calm and elegant atmosphere. Clawfoot tubs, pedestal sinks, country style antique brass faucets and old-fashioned country cabinets provide the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to spend time there. Plain white towels are recommended instead of patterned or bright modern patterns. Use wicker or wire baskets to keep your sponges, loofas and shampoos handy near the tub or shower.

Understanding how to decorate cottage style homes means including items like quilts, antique furniture or reproductions, flea-market pieces, trunks, chests, armoires, stenciling, wallpaper, adirondack chairs, flower wreaths and bistro chairs. These types of elements give cottage style homes the kind of rustic country decor that is simpler, very personal and warmly inviting.

Whether in a seaside setting, an urban environment, a countryside location or a wooded mountain retreat, cottage style homes are cozy and unassuming, combining the past with the present. Read all you can find and learn what creating the rustic country cottage means to you no matter where it's located. Enjoy expressing your personality and showing what the definition of home means to you.
