Now that you know the fundamentals, it is time to focus on applying online for SBA 8(a) status AND writing your social narrative.

Is it intimidating? YES, but you can successfully apply for SBA 8(a) status WITHOUT PAYING SOMEONE ELSE THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS, it is NOT that difficult. I did it, so can you!

Beginning with an extensive Internet research, I located several companies that would help me prepare the whole packet (which I didnt need the whole service) or the narrative but, the prices were outrageous! My budget would not justify hiring these consultants for hundreds or thousands of dollars. After recovering from sticker shock, I was even more determined to complete this application process and social narrative ON MY OWN as a personal challenge.

I invested over 80 hours of in-depth personal research, calling the SBA office in D.C., interviewing recent 8a designees and compiling a list of criteria to include in my own social narrative. Coming from a project management background, I kept notes on all of the processes, resources and tips. After organizing my materials, I completed the SBA application online and then produced a seven page narrative, submitted electronically to the SBA. In about a week, my company received 8a status.

There are three areas the SBA wants to see evidence of discrimination: education, employment and business work history. You can put together a compelling argument for your cause, just like I did, by focusing on four areas in your life. They are:

Family Background / Influence: It is relevant to start your narrative with a background history of your family and its influence upon your education, career and business endeavors. Describe the influence your family exerted on your career decisions. What were you expected to do with your life / career? What types of careers did your parents, siblings, grandparents or extended family members pursue? How did this differ from what you wanted to achieve later in life?

Educational Background / Opportunities: Educational experiences directly influence your ability to make career choices. Describe your educational background. Did you complete high school? Do you have a college degree? Where did you attend school? How long did it take you to complete your education?

Career Experience / Earning capacity: Career experiences directly influence your earning capacity and overall quality of life. Can you give an example of when you were subjected to harassment in your work environment that had a dramatic negative affect on your overall job performance?

Business History / Your experience as a small business owner since applying for and receiving SBA 8a status can be a great boost to your companys income.

Here are the two key points to remember as you prepare the narrative:

1. Think of this as a writing exercise: Plan on spending at least 3-4 hours writing, editing and preparing the final narrative. This is just a paper, dont stress!

2. Put on your Whiner Cap: This is the one time that it is OK to be a whiner. I know that this goes against all that you have taught, but in this case, to be a winner, you must be a whiner. You have permission to whine and write about it.

And finally.... be sure to add some quotes to your narrative. One way to add credibility to your narrative is to use quotes from studies what support your claims. The Internet is full of quotes that relate directly to your personal situation. I used eight quotes in my seven page narrative.

The best way to find quotes is to do a Google search www.google.com on key words that you want to emphasize in your narrative. For example I used the following descriptors:

The cyclocomputers that are available today are devices which a cyclist mounts on to their bicycle and which are able to calculate and display information relating to their cycle ride. Although much smaller than the devices you see mounted on either a car dashboard or the front of a motorcycle they do very much the same. The computers display (head unit) will be fixed to the handlebars in order that the person rider the bicycle can view the information much more easily and can alter between screens in order to see other information that they want to know about their trip.

The most basic versions of these computers are able to display the current speed at which the cyclist is traveling as well as their maximum speeds they were able to reach. These devices are also able to show how long each trip took and the total amount of distance that they have traveled each trip.

But whenever a person does install such a computer onto their bicycle then it will need to be configured properly and it is therefore important that they read the instructions provided to them by the manufacturers of the device that they have purchased.

Alice in Chains was another rock band from Seattle, Washington. The group was formed in 1987 and would eventually release three albums and an EP, Jar of Flies, responsible for over 10 million copies sold worldwide up to date. The group was known for their guitar-intense and distortion-filled music as exemplified in their album, Dirt, and this had a lot to do the groups signature guitar-driven attack by Jerry Cantrell and vocalist Layne Staleys singing.

Despite the successful tours, live performances and album releases by Alice in Chains however, Staleys drug problems would affect the bands future and his eventual death from substance overdose would cause its inevitable unofficial disbanding.

3. Stone Temple Pilots
Stone Temple Pilots, (STP,) is one big grunge rock band name that is from outside of Seattle. With over 17 million album copies of the groups 5 albums sold in the U.S. alone, 15 singles topping the Billboard charts, a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance and several American Music Awards tucked under the groups belt, STP remains as one of the more popular names among alternative independent bands in the early 1990s.

Something noteworthy about STP is that despite the instantaneous rise in their number of fans because of their equally instantaneous successful debut album, Core, so did the harsh criticisms against them. In fact the Rolling Stone magazine in January 1994 simultaneously had the group as the Best New Band according to its readers and the Worst New Band according to its music critics. Nevertheless, Stone Temple Pilots would eventually release four more successful albums to etch a name among the grunge music groups of the generation before eventually disbanding in 2002.

2. Pearl Jam
Pearl Jam is another Seattle-based grunge rock band and is responsible for the album, Ten. Ten together with Nirvanas Nevermind, is generally considered to had catapulted alternative rock in the early 90s towards the mainstream music spotlight. While Nevermind was generally considered to have had a greater role in plunging the whole alternative rock business mainstream, Ten still had considerate influence on the runaway success that was the 1990s alternative rock. Pearl Jams album in itself is certified 12x platinum at present and remains the groups most successful album.

The band has been criticized early in its career as a corporate cash-in on the phenomenal rise of alternative rock during that time but would eventually prove to be praiseworthy because of the different causes it stood up for such as going against rock star excess, their much publicized battle against Ticketmaster and their refusal to create music videos of their shows. The grunge group that tops the list has to be Nirvana. With the remarkable success of its single, Smells Like Teen Spirit, from its 1991 album, Nevermind, Nirvana almost single-handedly brought the whole alternative rock commercial success. The album in itself has already sold more than 10 million copies in the U.S. and more than 25 million internationally. Because of its feat, Nirvana is considered to be the flagship band of Generation X as aptly worded by Michael Azerrad of Rolling Stone.

Nirvana was so noteworthy in placing so much passion in perfecting its music that it had a lot of other drummers before being satisfied with Dave Grohl and it had to redo some of its songs such as All Apologies and Heart Shaped Box because it did not sound perfect.
